The New Monroe Branch of the Union County
Public Library System.

Union County Public Library Renovation Project Celebrates Grand Opening

Two years ago, three of the four public libraries in Union County struggled to survive with limited town funding, lack of space, and a history of leaking roofs and old utilities. During that period of time, Union County established a Regional policy that has made each library a county responsibility. Since then, the county has funded an extensive building program, and made a free computer instruction in English and Spanish available to customers. Over 100 public computers were added to the braches, along with 36,000 more square feet of usage. Union County has four branch libraries and three of the branches are open 7 days a week. Additional features were added to the libraries expansion including, toddler areas in each library, more children's programs, and expanded meeting rooms.
The Union County Public Library officially opened the new Monroe Branch Library on March 26, 2003. A formal ceremony was held Sunday, April 27, 2003 to celebrate the grand opening and it's great success! By its third week of operation, the library counted over 1,000 users per day.

Union County currently has four branch libraries. They include:

  • Union West Regional - serving Indian Trail, Stallings, Hemby Bridge, and Lake Park
  • Lois Morgan Edwards Memorial - serving Marshville, Wingate, and eastern Union County
  • Monroe - serving Monroe and the central region; also serves as the Main Library
  • Waxhaw - serving Waxhaw, Mineral Springs, and the southwest region
  • In addition, a subreagional library is being established in Unionville to serve Unionville and the Lawyers Road area.

The library web page now offers access to the catalog online and also provides NC Live, a major source of information on-line. Now, anyone, anywhere can use the library services. For more information, please call the library at 704/283-8184 or visit www.union.lib.nc.us.
