Centralina Workforce Development Board Welcomes New Board Members The Centralina Workforce Development Board is pleased to announce four new people who are committed to serving on the Board and support its mission to provide a workforce development system in the region that results in a highly skilled, productive workforce. The Board welcomes Mr. Jim Cook Director of The Cabarrus County Department of Social Services, Ms. Cynthia Hartzog Employment Recruiter with Thomasville Furniture Industries Inc. - Iredell County, Ms. Terry Sizemore Human Resources Manager with Standard Register Company, and Mr. Bob VanGorden Owner/President of BVG Consulting, Inc. Several new members attended a New Members Orientation on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 hosted by Mr. Mark Whitley, Centralina Workforce Development Board Chair, in Concord. The Centralina Workforce Development Board appreciates the commitment of its new members as well as all the time and hard work that its current and former members have contributed.

-Care, Inc. Pays Tribute to Youth Achievement in Iredell County
I-Care, Inc. held its annual Workforce Investment Act Youth Awards Banquet Thursday, April 10, 2003 at the Statesville Civic Center. Mr. Billy Thompson, teacher and coach at West Iredell Middle School was the guest speaker. The Workforce Investment Act Youth Program serves young people ages 14-21. The year-round program provides academic learning, work experience, summer employment opportunities, and supportive services. The banquet was a great success honoring 42 youth and their accomplishments in the program. Each young person in the Workforce Investment Act Program received a certificate and participating seniors were awarded with plaques. Top achievers in the program received special recognition. These awards were presented in the following categories:
The Awards Banquet not only celebrated youth achievement, it also commended worksites that employed youth for their hard work and dedication. A plaque was presented to the following employers in appreciation for all they have contributed to help the youth of Iredell County become productive and self-sufficient adults:
Over 100 people attended the I-Care, Inc. Workforce Investment Act Awards Banquet, including parents, teachers, and worksite supervisors. Ms. Mamie Houston, Director of the South Statesville Skills Center received "Worksite Supervisor of the Year Award." Tina Tate, I-Care, Inc. WIA Case Manager, stated, "Ms. Houston has gone beyond her call of duty. She is a great asset to the program!" I-Care, Inc. and the Workforce Investment Act Program are very proud of all the youth they serve.

Time to Nominate! The North Carolina Department of Commerce and Commission on Workforce Development have requested nominations for the 2003 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development. Those individuals who have shown outstanding performance in workforce development in their community should be nominated. The awards are divided into several categories including a "youth" award that has been divided into two categories this year. The first category recognizes older youth (18-21 yrs.) and the second category awards younger youth (14-17 yrs.) Please note that eligible younger youth nominees are individuals who at the time of enrollment into a workforce development program/activity, have not yet reached their 18th birthday and are at least 14 years of age. Also, eligible older youth nominees must have not reached their 22nd birthday and are at least 18 years of age. Nominations can be made for the following categories:

The New Monroe Branch of
the Union County Union County Public Library Renovation Project Celebrates Grand Opening Two years ago, three of the four public libraries
in Union County struggled to survive with limited town funding,
lack of space, and a history of leaking roofs and old utilities.
During that period of time, Union County established a Regional
policy that has made each library a county responsibility. Since
then, the county has funded an extensive building program, and
made a free computer instruction in English and Spanish available
to customers. Over 100 public computers were added to the braches,
along with 36,000 more square feet of usage. Union County has
four branch libraries and three of the branches are open 7 days
a week. Additional features were added to the libraries expansion
including, toddler areas in each library, more children's programs,
and expanded meeting rooms. Union County currently has four branch libraries. They include:
