Stanly Community College: A True JobLink Partner

For many people the loss of a job can have a devastating effect of their lives. The impact of such a loss has been lessened for some through a partnership between Stanly Community College and the Job Link Career Center in Stanly County. Clients coming to the JobLink Career Center to speak with Employment Security Commission employees are often referred to Stanly Community College to seek additional educational credentials and training which will then enable them to begin a new career and once again become gainfully employed. Stanly Community College has experienced a record increase in the number of students served recently. An overall increase in enrollment of 12% was seen this past year with an even larger one projected for the coming academic year. Increases were in every department of the College-Curriculum Instruction, Corporate and Professional Education, and Adult Literacy. Many students were referred through the Job Link Career Center. ESC has allowed one of their employees to be located on campus one day per week to assist these students with questions regarding their benefits.

Registration for fall semester at Stanly Community College was held on August 7-9. Weekend classes began on Saturday, August 10 with weekday classes that began on Monday, August 12. Options for students are numerous ranging from improving basic skills, earning a GED or High School Diploma, improving computer skills, various certifications, and many diploma and degree programs. There are several new programs available beginning this Fall such as Radiography, Early Childhood Associate/Special Education Concentration, and Cardiovascular/ Interventional Technology. The addition of the Crutchfield Education Center in Western Stanly County will allow the college to reach even more students beginning in the summer of 2003.
