A Vision For the Future - Building a High Performance Workplace Mr. Tom Covington, Executive Director of The North Carolina Progress Board, was the guest speaker at the Centralina Workforce Development Board meeting held on March 11 at the Union County Chamber of Commerce in Monroe. The Centralina WDB invited Mr. Covington to discuss the Progress Board's vision for the future of North Carolina - especially in workforce issues, and the role the Centralina Workforce Development Board can play in the process. The NC Progress Board is a permanent, independent state board whose mission is to define a long-term vision for the future of the state. The Board is made up of twenty-four members, appointed by the Governor, leaders of the General Assembly, and the Board itself to represent a cross section of business and government leaders of the state. Mr. Covington discussed how manufacturing jobs are declining in North Carolina and how the labor force is changing as well. "Not only do workers entering the labor market need advanced training, but those already in the workforce need retraining if they are to stay competitive in a global economy," stated Mr. Covington. Other topics Mr. Covington discussed at the meeting
included the long-term care industry, adult literacy, workplace
safety, and how to make known concerns to elected officials and
what is important to you as citizen of North Carolina. Mr. Covington's
remarks reinforced the trends for the future identified by the Board
as it develops a 2010 strategic plan. For more information about the NC Progress Board please

Biz University The Stanly County Chamber of Commerce and Stanly Community College Small Business Development Center have partnered to develop "Small Biz University." The program is made up of monthly seminars geared toward both the small business owner and the potential small business owner. The idea of Small Biz University was born over a year ago when Kim West, Director of the Small Business Development Center at Stanly CC approached the Stanly Chamber about helping her advertise the small business seminars. "Our chamber and the community college have limited budgets," says Emily Parry, Director of Communications for the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce. "We felt we could better serve our small business community by merging our skills and resources into one joint effort." The partnership works well with the Small Business Center scheduling the seminars, while the Chamber does most of the advertising and registration in exchange for a minimal registration fee of $10 ($5 for Chamber members). The March 20th seminar covered "Sources of Financing Your Business." The April schedule for the Small Biz University seminars includes:
