Premiere Fibers and Centralina Workforce Development Board Awarded First Incumbent Workforce Development Grant in North Carolina Premiere Fibers, Inc., a division of Universal Fiber Systems, LLC, was recently awarded the first Incumbent Workforce Development Grant in North Carolina. Approval for the $50,000 grant was made by the NC Commission on Workforce Development based on the review and recommendation made by the Centralina Workforce Development Board. Premiere Fibers Inc. is located in Ansonville in Anson County. The company with over 100 employees produces synthetic nylon and synthetic nylon filament yarns. Premiere Fibers applied for the grant in March 2003 through the Centralina Workforce Development Board. Mr. Roderick Robinson, the company's Safety and Training Manager, stated "we feel that by receiving a workforce development grant we will be able to better compete in the textiles market. We will utilize the funds received to better train our workforce by providing useful basic skills, soft skills, and technical skills training". Premiere Fibers, Inc. will work closely with South Piedmont Community College to insure quality training for approximately eighty-five (85) associates currently working at the facility. A major goal of the training initiative is to reduce scrap. Waste reduction is a key element in the success at Premiere Fibers, Inc. The training provided through this grant will ensure that employees are more productive and better able to achieve the company's goals. As with many companies that struggle during these difficult economic times and find it impossible to provide training to employees with their own funds, Premiere Fibers, Inc. will accomplish significant outcomes including lower turnover rates, avert layoffs, increased competitiveness, and increased trainee wages because of the Incumbent Workforce Development Program. The total length of the project is nine months. For more information about the Incumbent Workforce Development Program please contact the Centralina Workforce Development Board at (704) 348-2717 or visit www.centralinaworks.com to download program guidelines and application.

Development System Loses a The entire workforce development community was sadden by the recent death of long-time advocate and friend - Wayne Daves. Wayne died on May 5, 2003 from cancer. Wayne served in many capacities in his career - workforce development director for Gaston County, director of the NC Division of Employment and Training, executive director of the NC Commission on Workforce Development, and most recently as staff to the NC Workforce Development Board Directors Council. He was the most knowledgeable person on workforce development issues. Wayne also had an excellent sense of humor and never forgot how important it was for programs and services to be delivered at the local level. Wayne's role as a workforce development leader in North Carolina and the nation was unparalleled. We will truly miss him. The Centralina Workforce Development Board and all of our workforce partners wish to extend our condolences to Wayne's widow, Gail, and to the rest of the Daves family.
